Will OpenAI raise the price of ChatGPT before 2027?
Prediction markets price in the odds of a ChatGPT price increase as OpenAI navigates growing financial pressure

OpenAI has kept its two flagship subscription prices fixed for years, even as losses mount. ChatGPT Plus has cost $20 a month since February 2023, and ChatGPT Pro has cost $200 a month since it launched on December 5, 2024. Two weeks after the Pro launch, Sam Altman said he had chosen the price himself, thought the plan would make money, and admitted OpenAI was actually losing on Pro because “people use it much more than we expected.
Instead of raising prices, OpenAI has looked for revenue below the existing tiers. ChatGPT Go launched globally at $8 a month on January 16, 2026, after a year‑long test in India. In February 2026, the company began testing ads in ChatGPT and explicitly said that “Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education tiers will not have ads.” Twice now, OpenAI has gone looking for extra revenue, and twice it has left the $20 and $200 prices untouched.
The pressure to generate more revenue comes from the company’s huge losses. OpenAI reported $5.7 billion of revenue but a $21.3 billion net loss in the first quarter of 2026, against $665 billion of long‑term compute commitments, and has reset its spending plans toward roughly $600 billion by 2030.
Most companies have followed OpenAI's pricing strategy and also price their models at $20 and $200. So, raising Plus or Pro would carry immediate enormous risk for OpenAI. Many users would simply switch to competing products, especially since OpenAI’s models are not even the best in the industry. A price hike could therefore cost more in churn than it gains in ARPU, which helps explain why management has avoided it so far.
At 94 cents, the “No” on the price‑increase contract at Kalshi returns about 6.38% by year‑end. Considering OpenAI’s strategy and the competitive landscape, it is a very low‑risk way to bet that the $20 and $200 tiers stay put.
