Can xAI actually ship Grok 5 before the end of 2026?

Grok 5 has been pushed back repeatedly by xAI, leaving prediction markets to price a release that keeps slipping into the future

Can xAI actually ship Grok 5 before the end of 2026?

Prediction markets have spent most of 2026 pricing when xAI will finally ship Grok 5, and every deadline so far has expired without a release. The latest Kalshi market asks whether Grok 5 arrives before October 1, 2026, or before January 1, 2027. “No” before October 1 trades at 97 cents, while “No” before year‑end costs 34 cents.

Elon Musk has now given four different timelines for Grok 5, and each one has slipped.

Many are already aware that Elon Musk’s record on naming dates is, at best, mixed and often poor. For instance, to name a few:

  • The Cybertruck was promised for late 2021 and delivered in November 2023
  • Robotaxis were promised for 2020 and launched in Austin in June 2025
  • The second‑generation Roadster was promised for 2020 and has still not shipped
  • Within xAI, Grok 3 is the best case, arriving only about a month or two late.

The bullish case rests on hardware and funding. Colossus 2 in Memphis has reached about 555,000 GPUs, xAI closed a $20 billion round in January with Nvidia participating, and Grok 5 variants have reportedly been training since around October 2025, longer than any previous xAI run. Against that, three co‑founders left in February 2026, and xAI lost $2.47 billion on $818 million of revenue in the first quarter.

At 97 cents, buying "No" on the "October 1" deadline results in a 3.09% return. Given the mixed facts of the model’s launch this year, it’s best to avoid buying “No” on the year-end deadline, as it’s entirely possible that the model could actually be released by that date. However, we cannot confidently predict this outcome and take a position, nor would we take the other side due to the inherent uncertainty involved. Therefore, despite the low return, the safest course of action on the board is to bet on the October 1 deadline.
