81 years without a shot fired between China-Japan pays 10%

On July 19, a Chinese destroyer fired machine guns at a floating target in water Japan claims as its own, and Tokyo lodged a protest. Polymarket's China-Japan military clash market went from about 4 cents in mid-July to 9. Betting against it pays roughly 10% when the market closes on December 31. Here's why that's the smart decision.

A clash means use of force between the two militaries: missile strikes, artillery fire, an exchange of gunfire, direct engagement. Thus, warning shots, artillery into empty water, missiles that land in territorial waters or pass through airspace, none of that counts.

Almost everything that has happened falls outside that list, which is also why the contract is trading so low:

• Chinese jets held a targeting radar on Japanese fighters near Okinawa for about half an hour in December, which Tokyo called dangerous.
• Chinese government ships spent 357 days of 2025 in the zone around the Senkaku Islands, a fourth straight record.
• Japan's scrambles against Chinese aircraft fell to 366 last fiscal year, the fewest since 2012.
• Two coast guards faced off near the islands on July 7 and each side said it expelled the other, with no contact.
• A Chinese and Russian naval group sailed a circuit around Japan between July 25 and 27, shadowed by two Japanese destroyers.

Both governments have been loud, and both have been careful. Tokyo said the live firing could pose a danger to vessels nearby. Beijing's defense ministry said the patrol took place on the high seas and that Japan's claim over the reef holds no legal ground, and separately called Japan's new nuclear deterrence debate a red line that should never be crossed.

None of that is gunfire. Chinese and Japanese forces have never exchanged fire in the 81 years both states have existed, through a 2010 ramming, a 2013 radar lock and a 2025 one.
