How to make 43% on Vinicius Junior doing absolutely nothing

Jose Mourinho has told the Real Madrid board something the Polymarket traders appears not to have read

How to make 43% on Vinicius Junior doing absolutely nothing

Real Madrid has not sold Vinicius Junior. They may never sell him. But on Polymarket's transfer market, that outcome costs 70 cents and returns 43% by September 2. Which sounds strange, because the market asks where he transfers to, and Real Madrid is where he already plays.

Here is why it is on the list. You pick a club, and if Vinicius joins it, your side of the market wins. The rule then adds that if he has not joined anybody by September 1, the market settles on Real Madrid.

So the Real Madrid side wins if he signs a new contract. It wins if he refuses to sign. It wins if the two of them argue until Christmas. It even wins if he runs his contract down and leaves for free in 2027. However, only one thing beats it: a finished, announced transfer in the next 34 days.

Last Friday, The Athletic reported that Arsenal were looking at him. Real Madrid fell from 94 cents to 58.5 in 30 hours. Arsenal rose from under one cent to 30.

David Ornstein, the reporter who broke it, wrote that the interest was at an early stage. He wrote that Arsenal had not spoken to Real Madrid and that it might come to nothing. Nobody had called the player's agents either. Fabrizio Romano, who breaks most big transfers before anybody else, posted about Arsenal three times that weekend and never mentioned Vinicius once.

The problem is the bill. The Spanish paper Sport says Real Madrid's president Florentino Pérez wants at least €160 million. The Daily Mail puts the wage at £500,000 a week. That is roughly double what Bukayo Saka, Arsenal's best-paid player, earns, and the biggest contract the club has ever written. Arsenal also want Bruno Guimarães, a midfielder at Newcastle. They need a defender, because their own one, William Saliba, is injured. And they refused to pay £117 million for the Aston Villa forward Morgan Rogers three weeks ago.

Real Madrid are not pushing Vinicius out, either. Jose Mourinho took over as their manager in June and told the board he wants to keep his best players. Vinicius is about to be made second captain. Pérez said in June that Vinicius wants to stay, and that he wants him to stay.

Talks have already run for 18 months with no deal. Madrid have offered around €20 million a year after tax. His agents at Roc Nation want that, plus a one-off bonus of about €15 million just for signing. Pérez has never paid one of those to anybody. If he pays it to Vinicius, the rest of the squad will ask for the same.

It just cannot turn into a transfer by September 1. Arsenal have 34 days, no bid, no phone call, and €160 million to find.
