GPT-6 mania left a 19% payout on the table for realists
There is a five week bet in the GPT-6 market that only loses if OpenAI does something it has never once done

On Polymarket's GPT-6 release market, a launch by August 21 trades at 17 cents, propped up by leaked reports that OpenAI is targeting August for GPT-5.7, GPT-6, or both. OpenAI has confirmed none of it, and its own release calendar says the date is close to impossible.

GPT-4 came out in March 2023. GPT-5 followed in August 2025, a gap of 29 months, and that was with relentless competitive pressure from Google and years of "GPT-5 is imminent" rumors that all proved early. An August 21 GPT-6 would land just 12 months after GPT-5, meaning OpenAI would have to cut its flagship development cycle by more than half, in the era when each new flagship requires more training compute, more safety evaluation, and more launch infrastructure than the one before. Nothing in the company's history supports a halving of that cycle.
The second problem for the August date is what OpenAI is shipping right now. It is mid-stride in its point-release cadence. GPT-5.3 in February 2026, 5.4 in March, 5.5 in April, and GPT-5.6 in June, released in three versions of ascending capability. OpenAI is methodically milking the GPT-5 architecture, one upgrade roughly every month, each needing its own testing and rollout runway. A team five weeks from unveiling a new flagship does not spend those weeks launching three tiers of the old one.
The market itself prices GPT-6 by September 30 at 75% and by year-end at 88%. Even that looks optimistic against the 29-month precedent, but it is at least arguable. The 17 cents on one specific August week is not.
Buying No on August 21 costs 84 cents and pays a full dollar in five weeks, roughly a 19% return. It loses only if OpenAI compresses a 29-month flagship cycle into 12, abandons its own monthly upgrade rhythm mid-stream, and does it all on a date that leaked in advance, three things it has never done even once, let alone together.
