Does Hacks or Widow’s Bay win Outstanding Comedy Series at the 2026 Emmys?

Tonight’s Emmy Awards will decide whether Widow’s Bay can turn its success in technical categories into the industry’s top comedy prize. The show won 8 Creative Arts Emmys on September 5 and 6, 2026, more than any other program. That result helped make it the favorite among experts: four of the five predictions selected Widow’s Bay, including Tyler Doster of AwardsWatch, who still had it ahead of Hacks on September 11. Kalshi’s market for the Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series also shows the same, pricing Widow’s Bay at 86 cents and Hacks at 13 cents.

However, the confidence treats the Creative Arts results as stronger evidence than they really are. The final voting period ran from August 17 through August 26, 2026, which means voters had already submitted their ballots before the Creative Arts ceremonies took place. Widow’s Bay’s sweep therefore could not have persuaded them. At most, it reveals how certain Academy members had already voted.

We point this out because the voters who choose the main comedy award are not the same voters who decide most Creative Arts categories. All National Active members vote in the program categories, including Outstanding Comedy Series, while craft awards are judged by specialized peer groups. Widow’s Bay won seven craft categories across six peer groups, but those groups represent only a small, specialized section of the broader membership choosing the main award.

For example, in 2024, The Bear won the comedy Creative Arts awards 7 to 1 and appeared to have the strongest technical support. Nevertheless, it lost Outstanding Comedy Series to Hacks. That leaves the Creative Arts leader with only one main-comedy victory in the last two comparable cases, hardly enough evidence to justify treating a sweep as decisive.

We think Hacks has more chances to win. It leads this year’s comedies with 24 nominations, and the year’s most-nominated comedy has won Outstanding Comedy Series in five of the last ten years. Widow’s Bay can point to the recent strength of new shows, since first-season comedies have won three of the last five. The Studio is a particularly good example as it premiered on March 26, 2025, missed the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and Critics Choice Awards, led the Creative Arts Emmys, and then won the main comedy award. Widow’s Bay premiered on April 29, 2026, and missed that same awards cycle.

But even the farewell-season argument does not clearly rescue Widow’s Bay. Of 13 final-season comedies nominated since 2011, only two won, while every final-season nominee that had already won the category lost. Hacks was one of those three unsuccessful returning winners in 2024.

That is why Hacks looks more attractive at 13 cents. A winning contract would return 669.23%, while Widow’s Bay’s 86-cent price assumes that specialized craft voters will accurately predict the choice of the Academy’s full program-category electorate.
