Can Atlético Madrid beat Real Madrid on September 20?
The Madrid derby pits two title contenders against each other with very different underlying numbers

The Madrid derby arrives with both teams near the top of La Liga, but only one is looking actually strong. Real Madrid have taken 15 points from six games under José Mourinho, who took over in June, and sit second behind Barcelona. Atlético Madrid are third on 13, and the two meet at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Sunday. Polymarket prices Real Madrid at 50 cents, Atlético at 26.5, and the draw at 24.5. We think Real Madrid are the side to back, and the reasoning is quite simple.
On the surface, Atlético's attack looks explosive due to 14 goals from 9.6 expected goals, running about 45% ahead of the chances they have actually created. But if we strip out their 4-0 midweek win over Osasuna, in which four of those 9.6 expected goals came in a single night, then they have been generating just over a goal's worth of chances per game.
Real Madrid, by contrast, have made 18.5 expected goals and conceded 5.4, the best margin in Spain. Kylian Mbappé has seven goals from 7.9 expected, so there is no obvious regression waiting to drag his output down.
Atlético also have to solve a personnel problem up front. Antoine Griezmann left for Orlando City in the summer, Alexander Sørloth and Pablo Barrios are out with calf injuries, and Julián Álvarez has missed four of the last seven matches and is racing to be fit for the derby. That leaves Jonathan David, on loan from Juventus, who scored in each of his first two league games but is now being asked to carry an entire attack in a high-pressure fixture.
Everything, especially the squad health, points to Real Madrid as the more credible side. They hold the best expected-goals margin in the league, their star striker is performing in line with his chances, and Atlético are missing key attackers while relying on a single loanee to lead the line. We think Real Madrid are worth buying at 50 cents, which returns 100% on Sunday, September 20.
