Betting Rodri joins Barcelona before September pays 13%

On Thursday, the agent for Rodri, the Manchester City midfielder who won the Ballon d'Or in 2024, told Spanish radio that his client had decided to join Barcelona. Polymarket's Rodri transfer market spent Friday getting less sure of it rather than more, going up and down. Backing the move costs 88 cents today and pays 13.6% in 25 days if Rodri signs for Barcelona before the transfer window shuts on September 1.

Most think there are two risks to this deal, but in reality there's only one:

• The market pays out on the club Rodri officially joins, and a club announcement settles it the day it appears
• Whether Spanish league rules then let Barcelona register him to play is a separate process that happens afterward and cannot change the payout
• Barcelona signed Dani Olmo in the summer of 2024 and was still arguing with the league about registering him the following January
• Manchester City asked $86.5m and then $75m for him, while Barcelona has valued him at around €60 million
• Rodri's contract ends in June 2027, so a club that does not sell him this month loses him for nothing next summer

So what's the real risk? The fee and only the fee. Manchester City are arguing over roughly €15 million.

Two outcomes on this market have already been near certainties and then got repriced. Rodri staying at Manchester City was worth 94.7 cents on July 6. Rodri joining Real Madrid was worth 82.45 cents on July 30. Both collapsed when the player leaned somewhere else, and on both occasions nobody knew where. He has now said it in public. Real Madrid is down to 4 cents, Paris Saint-Germain's contract is non-existent anymore, and Barcelona lost Frenkie de Jong to a torn knee ligament this month, which is why they need a midfielder at all.
