A single prison cell is deciding Brazil's election

Brazil votes on October 4, and Polymarket's Brazil presidential election market prices Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva at 61 cents to win a fourth term. Behind him sits Flavio Bolsonaro at 25 cents, then Renan Santos at 10 and Ronaldo Caiado at 2, an opposition scattered across three names that add up to less than the incumbent.

The reason the right is scattered is that Jair Bolsonaro, the man who forced Lula to a runoff in 2022, was imprisoned in September for plotting a coup and cannot appear on the ballot, so the movement is carried by his son Flavio, a senator who inherits the surname without the reach. For a stretch, that gap did not show. Datafolha had Flavio ahead of Lula 46 to 45 in a runoff back in April, the first time the incumbent had trailed in the series.

Then a bank scandal damaged the opposition through the spring, and by June 20 Lula had retaken the runoff lead by four points, a lead that widened again in mid-July. An 80-year-old president who looked beatable in April now leads the only challenger with real numbers, while the rest of the field pulls votes away from that same challenger rather than from him.

Buying Lula at 61 cents pays a full dollar if he wins, a 64% return decided this autumn. The bet loses if the economy turns on him or the right consolidates behind Flavio in a two-man runoff where the anti-incumbent vote finally stacks. What makes it worth the price is that the one Bolsonaro who could actually beat Lula is in a cell, and the one on the ballot keeps, unfortunately, losing ground.
