Premium subscribers came in at 300 million, up 7 million in the quarter and 9% on the year, against guidance of 299 million.
Monthly listeners were 777 million against 778 million guided, with the free tier at 494 million and growing 14%.
Revenue was €4.8 billion, up 14%, with premium revenue up 15% and advertising up 1%.
Gross margin hit 33.4%, a record and above the 33.1% guided.
Operating income was €655m against €630m guided, up 61% on last year.
Net income was €545m, or €2.61 a share, against roughly €2.80 expected.
Shares are down more than 4% before the open, after closing Monday at $486.33.
Co-chief executive Alex Norström says the company has reached "a scale that few companies in history have reached" and called the business "healthy and compounding."

Guidance for this quarter was 778 million monthly listeners, 299 million paying subscribers, revenue of €4.8bn, and operating income of €630m, which was below what analysts wanted.
The stock closed Monday at $486.33, down 2.72% on the day and down 17% year-to-date.
