Live coverage of the Strait of Hormuz oil war 2026
9:00 AM EDTJul 20, 2026
The US completed another round of strikes after a fresh Trump warning to Tehran, and Trump began weighing whether to widen the war. Nearly five months in, the Strait of Hormuz is still contested, oil is still elevated, and neither side has stepped back.
9:00 PM EDTJul 17, 2026
US Central Command ran its seventh consecutive night of strikes. Iran reported at least 46 killed and more than 400 wounded in recent US strikes, while the US counted 14 service members killed since the war began.
2:00 AM EDTJul 17, 2026
US strikes collapsed a tower at Chabahar port and killed eight in a bridge strike. Iran hit power infrastructure and fired missiles at Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait, damaging a Kuwaiti plant that supplies 90% of the country's drinking water. Only eight vessels crossed the strait, a three-week low, and Brent held above $86.
11:30 PM EDTJul 7, 2026
Trump declared the ceasefire dead at the NATO summit, calling Iran's leaders "scum" and "sick people." The US launched a second wave of strikes on 90 targets across Iran, Brent jumped back toward its wartime highs at $76.48 a barrel, and Iran retaliated against Jordan.
8:00 AM EDTJul 7, 2026
Iran struck three vessels in the strait. The US rescinded Iran's oil-export license, tearing up a core piece of the MOU.
1:00 AM EDTJun 25, 2026
Iran drone-struck a ship in the strait, the first breach of the MOU. The US hit back with contained strikes, Iran fired on Bahrain and Kuwait, and the two sides agreed to stop the exchange almost as fast as it started.
7:00 AM EDTJun 17, 2026
The two sides signed a 14-point memorandum opening a 60-day negotiating window. It ended the ceasefire on paper, lifted the naval blockade, reopened the strait, and handed Iran a broad oil-sanctions waiver.

However, Iran would use "best efforts" for safe passage, with "no charge for 60 days only," leaving the question of who controls the strait unanswered.

10:00 AM EDTJun 14, 2026
Trump announced a US-Iran "peace deal" and said the Strait of Hormuz was reopening.
10:00 PM EDTMay 6, 2026
After Iranian forces attacked three US warships transiting the strait, the US struck military sites at Bandar Abbas and Qeshm Island. Trump called the exchange a "love tap" and insisted the ceasefire still held.
2:00 AM EDTMay 4, 2026
The US launched Operation Project Freedom to evacuate 23,000 civilians from 87 countries stranded in the Gulf. The Pentagon estimated its blockade had already cost Iran $4.8 billion in lost oil revenue.
3:00 AM EDTApr 17, 2026
Araghchi declared the strait open to all shipping, and oil dropped 11% in a single move. Within a day, Iran shut it again after the US refused to lift its blockade, and ships that tried to cross came under fire.
6:00 AM EDTApr 11, 2026
With the Islamabad talks collapsed, the US Navy entered the strait to clear mines and threw a naval blockade around Iran's ports. The IMO reported 20,000 mariners and 2,000 ships stranded inside the Gulf.
1:00 PM EDTApr 7, 2026
The US and Iran announced a two-week ceasefire, with Vice President JD Vance heading to Pakistan to negotiate. The same day, Russia and China vetoed a UN Security Council proposal on strait safety, calling it biased against Iran.
4:00 AM EDTMar 26, 2026
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said ships from China, Russia, India, Iraq and Pakistan would be allowed through. Israel said it had killed Iranian navy commander Alireza Tangsiri, accusing him of running the closure.
8:00 AM EDTMar 23, 2026
Trump postponed the ultimatum, citing "very good and productive conversations" with Tehran, and Brent fell from $114 to $102 on the news.
11:00 AM EDTMar 22, 2026
Trump threatened to "obliterate" Iran's power plants within 48 hours if the strait stayed closed. Iran's defense council answered by threatening to mine the entire Persian Gulf.
2:00 AM EDTMar 13, 2026
Saudi Arabia cut oil production by 20%, from 10 to 8 million barrels a day, after shutting offshore fields, while Iraqi output had already collapsed by 70%.
5:00 AM EDTMar 11, 2026
IEA member states agreed unanimously to release 400 million barrels from emergency reserves to blunt the shock, one of the largest coordinated releases ever attempted. It barely dented the price.
7:00 AM EDTMar 10, 2026
US intelligence said Iran had started laying naval mines across the strait. Trump demanded they be cleared, and the US military said it destroyed 16 Iranian minelaying boats.
3:00 AM EDTMar 8, 2026
Brent crude cleared $100 a barrel for the first time in four years and spiked as high as $126, the fastest oil shock in memory. Qatar's energy minister warned that other Gulf producers might halt exports and declare force majeure, saying it "will bring down economies." Shipping insurance jumped four to six times in a single week.
8:00 AM ESTMar 3, 2026
President Trump said the US Navy would begin escorting tankers through the strait "as soon as possible." Reports emerged that Iran would let only Chinese-flagged vessels pass.
12:00 AM ESTMar 2, 2026
The IRGC confirmed it was closing the Strait of Hormuz and warned any ship that tried to pass. Tankers switched off their transponders and stopped moving. The waterway stayed technically open and was effectively shut, with close to a fifth of the world's oil now stuck behind it.
2:00 PM ESTFeb 28, 2026
The US and Israel launched coordinated airstrikes on Iran's military and nuclear sites, and Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed. Iran answered with missiles and drones on Israeli cities and US bases across the Gulf. At least three tankers were hit near the strait that night, one left ablaze off Oman. The 2026 Iran war had begun.
4:00 AM ESTFeb 15, 2026
With a US-Israeli strike looking likely, Iran tripled its oil exports and drew down storage to push barrels out ahead of any disruption, and Saudi Arabia moved to do the same.
