Will OpenAI announce it has created AGI before the end of 2026?

OpenAI recently unveiled GPT‑6 Astra with talk of an “AGI era,” yet a single explicit declaration that would settle the market still has not arrived

Will OpenAI announce it has created AGI before the end of 2026?

OpenAI's September 3 launch of GPT‑6 Astra came with bold rhetoric as the president, Greg Brockman, declared, "Welcome to the AGI era," and told reporters, "For me personally, I do think we're there."

But the Polymarket contract that matters here has a much stricter trigger: it pays "Yes" only if OpenAI, or an official company representative, explicitly announces that it has achieved artificial general intelligence by December 31, 2026 ET. As of September 7, "Yes" trades at 24 cents and "No" at 76 cents. We are taking the latter, and here's why.

The contract's resolution rule effectively requires three things to be true at once:

  1. an actual announcement
  2. the claim made in OpenAI's own voice about OpenAI
  3. a completed act (i.e., a declaration that AGI has been achieved)

Anything short of all three settles "No," including silence or third‑party descriptions. Brockman's "Welcome to the AGI era" line describes a period. OpenAI has not said it created an artificial general intelligence either. Even the company's own launch post, "Path to Astra," published September 1, does not use the term "AGI" at all.

There is also no longer an external mechanism forcing such a declaration. The restructured Microsoft–OpenAI partnership announced on October 28, 2025, stated that "once AGI is declared by OpenAI," an independent expert panel would verify it, but on April 27, 2026, the two companies removed that clause. Brockman confirmed on September 3 that "there's no contractual AGI triggering anymore," meaning OpenAI faces no formal obligation to label any system as AGI.

Public comments from leadership point in the same direction. In a TIME interview published August 26, 2026, CEO Sam Altman said OpenAI was "not quite yet" at AGI, though he added that the company would have an internal system he would call AGI by year‑end, the same deadline as the market. And again, as we mentioned above, an internal label or a journalist's report about one does not satisfy the contract unless OpenAI itself makes the announcement in its own voice.

At 76 cents, "No" returns 31.58% if OpenAI does not explicitly announce that it has achieved AGI by December 31, 2026. While this is not a 2x or higher payoff, it is a high‑probability trade grounded in pure facts.
