Islam Makhachev defends the UFC welterweight title in Philadelphia on Saturday against a man nobody has ever finished
18 professional fights, and nobody has finished Ian Machado Garry in any of them. His corner mentions it whenever a microphone appears, and they are right to. On Saturday night, he walks into an arena in Philadelphia to challenge Islam Makhachev for the UFC welterweight title.
The reason why we think Garry will likely lose is because 6 of his fights in a row have gone the full distance. His last finish was only back in May 2023.
On the other hand, Makhachev has 13 submission wins and has never been submitted himself in 29 fights, against one submission win in Garry's 18. Plus, Garry's single defeat came to Shavkat Rakhmonov, the one elite wrestler he has ever been asked to handle.
Makhachev is 6 for 6 in title fights, and a win on Saturday takes the UFC's longest winning streak outright from Anderson Silva.
Of course Garry has clear physical advantages: he is 5 inches taller, has a 4-inch reach edge, and is 6 years younger. But those edges matter far less on the ground, where Makhachev has repeatedly finished elite opponents, and Garry’s only professional loss came against the one high-level wrestler he has faced.
