How to make 45 percent on Chinese AI in eleven days
Two monster AI models launched in a week, and the aftermath left a 45 percent return on the table before August
For most of the year the question of China's best AI company barely qualified as a question, with Alibaba's Qwen sitting above 90 cents and everyone else fighting for scraps. Then Moonshot changed the math in a single afternoon. On July 17 it released Kimi K3, a 2.8 trillion parameter open-weight model billed as the largest ever released to the public and strong enough to trade blows with the top American systems. The market on Polymarket's best Chinese AI company end of July market dragged Moonshot from a rounding error up into the mid-40s and knocking Alibaba off its perch.
However, Alibaba took two days to answer. On July 19 it previewed Qwen3.8 Max, a 2.4 trillion parameter multimodal model it claims sits second only to Fable 5 across the systems it has benchmarked, with open weights promised to follow. The odds snapped back slightly. Alibaba trades around 64 percent today and Moonshot around 34, with DeepSeek and Baidu barely registering, which leaves the whole contest as a straight fight between two labs.
The market resolves July 31, which is 11 days out, and a model good enough to unseat both of these is unlikely to appear in 11 days. Frontier releases are planned in quarters, and the two labs capable of a surprise just spent their ammunition this week. Buying Alibaba around 69 cents pays a full dollar at month end, a 45% return, and it loses only if a third Chinese lab, likely DeepSeek, produces a miracle before August.
