How many tornadoes does the United States record in 2026?
The US has already reported more tornadoes than the market’s top threshold, but the final count depends on what survives official review.

Illinois has recorded 243 tornado reports this year. No American state has ever finished a full calendar year with that many, and it is only the first week of September. The state's yearly average is 66.
Nationwide, the picture is just as extreme. The Storm Prediction Center counted 1,395 tornado reports across the United States through late August, against 1,162 in an average year.
The surge is already present on Polymarket, as it runs a market on where the 2026 count finally lands, cut into brackets, and the top bracket asks for 1,250 or more. It trades at 90 cents.
So the count has already cleared the line with four months left to run. During those 4 months, tornadoes don't just disappear. For example, September through December average 207 tornadoes between them.
Why then is the market not priced at 99 cents?
It's due to the market rules. The resolution runs on the National Centers for Environmental Information, which publishes confirmed tornadoes rather than raw reports. Simply put, a single tornado that crossed three counties and was reported three separate times is actually counted as one in the raw report.
Again, let's look at the actual, real-life example. The 243 Illinois tornado reports in 2026 were reduced to 210 confirmed tornadoes, a haircut of 14%.
To be safe, even if we apply a 20% reduction to the current 1,395 number, plus the average of 207 tornadoes from September to December, the final result would still be 1,282 tornadoes, or 32 more than the Polymarket contract. Which is why we are buying the 'Yes' on '1250+' to capture 11.11% by the end of the year.
