Does Apple's foldable iPhone reach buyers before the end of 2026?
Apple is expected to unveil a foldable iPhone on September 9, and the market is split on whether it lands in September or later

Apple's September 9 product event is widely expected to include a foldable iPhone, and the Polymarket market on a foldable release before 2027 hinges on whether that phone actually reaches customers by year‑end. The contract pays "Yes" only if Apple releases the foldable iPhone, meaning it is available for purchase by the general public, by 11:59 PM ET on December 31, 2026.
The event anchors a ladder of dated contracts with the same underlying question but different cutoffs. As of September 7, 2026, "Yes" trades at roughly:
- 11 cents for a September 15 deadline
- 46 cents for September 30
- 93 cents for October 31
- 97 cents for December 31
Apple's own launch history supports an early sale date. Over the last five iPhone generations, new models went on sale 10, 9, 10, 11, and 10 days after announcement. If the foldable follows that pattern, a September 9 reveal implies an on‑sale date around September 19, inside the September 30 window and well before October 31.
The market, however, is not fully pricing that pattern.
- Analyst Ming‑Chi Kuo has argued the foldable will "repeat the iPhone X story." Apple announced the iPhone X on September 12, 2017, but did not put it on sale until November 3, 2017, a 52‑day gap. Counting 52 days from September 9, 2026 lands on October 31, 2026.
- On the other hand, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said on September 1 that the foldable would launch alongside, or very close to, the new Pro phones, implying a September release.
- Nikkei Asia reported on September 4 that production in late August was running at only a few hundred units per day, which supports Kuo's more cautious timeline and his July 6 comment that pre‑orders might not open until Q4.
We see the October 31 contract as the best balance of timing and payoff. Firstly, at 93 cents, it returns 7.53% over 54 days. Secondly, October 31 is the earliest deadline on the ladder that pays under both named forecasts.
