Full-time: LASK 3-6 Liverpool. Nine goals, a hat-trick and a $1.2 million whale wipeout

That’s it in Linz. Florian Flecker scored again on 77 minutes to give LASK a respectable final half-hour, but Liverpool’s six goals were more than enough. Bradley Barcola’s hat-trick was the standout, and Iraola’s side answered Sunday’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester City in emphatic style.

How the pre-match markets settled:

  • Liverpool to win (69%): Paid.
  • Liverpool -1.5 handicap (44%): Paid comfortably, with a three-goal margin.
  • Both teams to score (56%): Paid, thanks to LASK’s late fightback.
  • Over 3.5 goals (39%): Paid, and then some. Nine goals cleared every main totals line up to 8.5.

The biggest lesson of the night is in that last one. Before kick-off, Polymarket expected a fairly controlled Liverpool win, with more than six-in-ten traders betting on three goals or fewer. Instead, the match delivered nine. The totals and team-goals markets were repriced again and again as the goals kept coming.

75': LASK 2-6 Liverpool. Eight goals, and the totals market keeps paying out

LASK have pulled another one back through Florian Flecker on 74 minutes, making it eight goals in Linz with a quarter of an hour still to play.

What it means on Polymarket:

  • Over 7.5 goals is now settled. Before kick-off, the market’s main totals line was 3.5 goals, with “over” priced at just 39%. This match has already more than doubled it.
  • LASK’s goals market has paid out too. Traders who backed LASK to score at least once at 61% before the game have been rewarded twice over. LASK now have two goals against a side that came in as heavy favourites.
  • The next line in play is over 8.5 goals. One more goal from either side lands it.

This match is a good example of why soccer ranks among the most volatile sports on prediction markets. A game priced as a fairly tidy Liverpool win before kick-off has delivered eight goals. That forced constant repricing across the totals, both-teams-to-score and team goals markets.

72': LASK 1-6 Liverpool. Barcola completes his hat-trick as the goals keep coming

This has turned into one of the wildest nights of the Champions League season. Robert Ljubičić gave the home fans something to cheer on 63 minutes, but Liverpool hit straight back. Bradley Barcola completed his hat-trick on 66 minutes, and Lewis Koumas made it six on 72.

Can Liverpool make it 7 goals? The last time they hit that total was against Rangers in 2022.

51': LASK 0-4 Liverpool. Frimpong makes it four, and another market is settled

Jeremie Frimpong has added a fourth for Liverpool six minutes into the second half, and the rout is on.

That goal settles over 3.5 goals, which was priced at just 39% before kick-off. Traders who backed goals before the game have already been paid out.

What’s still live:

  • Both teams to score: LASK still need a goal. It was 56% before kick-off and is now the main market left with genuine uncertainty.
  • Over 4.5 goals: One more goal from either side would land it.

For raybanman, it’s now beyond rescue. LASK would need three goals just to land the handicap bet, and four to draw. Barring an extraordinary comeback, this whale is heading for a loss of around $1.2 million.

Half-time: LASK 0-3 Liverpool. The market has all but settled the result

Liverpool are rampant in Linz. Ronald Araújo opened the scoring on 22 minutes, and Bradley Barcola added two more on 24 and 37 minutes to give the visitors a three-goal lead at the break. A side priced at 69% before kick-off is now about as close to a certainty as a football market gets.

Where the main markets stand:

  • Match result: Liverpool to win should now be trading in the high 90s. LASK would need four unanswered goals in 45 minutes.
  • Liverpool -1.5 handicap: It was a near coin flip before kick-off, with Liverpool at 44%, and it now needs LASK to score twice just to come back into play.
  • Over 3.5 goals: Only 39% before the game, this now needs just one more goal. Expect it to be one of the most actively traded markets in the second half.
  • Both teams to score: It was 56% before kick-off, and now rests entirely on whether LASK can find a consolation goal.

The whale: For raybanman, this is about as bad as it gets. Both positions, worth almost $1.2 million combined, are close to worthless at half-time:

  • The draw bet: LASK need three goals just to draw.
  • The handicap bet: LASK need two goals to get it back in play.

Unless the trader managed to sell or hedge during the first half, they are on course for a loss of about $1.2 million, more than their entire lifetime profit on Polymarket.

24': LASK 0-2 Liverpool. Two goals in two minutes turn the night on its head

Liverpool have blown this open. Ronald Araújo headed the visitors in front on 22 minutes, and Bradley Barcola doubled the lead just two minutes later.

On Polymarket, that should send Liverpool’s win price surging from 69% before kick-off to well above 90%. That’s exactly the kind of in-game swing this market was built for.

It’s a disastrous start for raybanman. With Liverpool two goals clear, both of the trader’s bets are currently losing:

  • Liverpool not to win ($792,681): LASK now need at least two goals just to draw.
  • The LASK handicap ($402,817): Liverpool are currently winning by exactly the two goals that sink it.

If the score stays as it is, raybanman loses about $1.2 million, more than their entire lifetime profit on Polymarket. Their best hope now is a LASK goal. A 2-1 finish would at least land the handicap bet and cut the loss to roughly $499,000.

Update: The whale doubles down

Raybanman isn’t done. At 4:34pm UTC, 11 minutes before kick-off, the trader added another $136,340 on Liverpool not to win, at $0.33. That trade alone would return $413,152.

The “Liverpool not to win” position now totals $792,681 at an average of $0.325, with a potential payout of about $2.44 million. Including the $402,817 handicap bet, raybanman now has nearly $1.2 million riding on this match. That’s more than the trader’s entire lifetime profit on Polymarket.

Whale alert: $1 million bet against Liverpool

A Polymarket trader named raybanman has just made one of the biggest bets we’ve seen on a Champions League match this season, and it’s against Liverpool.

In the 25 minutes before kick-off, the trader placed two large positions:

  • Liverpool not to win: $619,879 at an average of $0.325. This pays out about $1.9 million if the match ends in a draw or a LASK win.
  • Liverpool not to win by two or more goals: $402,817 on LASK with the 1.5-goal handicap, at an average of $0.578. This pays out about $697,000 if LASK win, draw, or lose by a single goal.

That’s just over $1 million in total, roughly the same as the trader’s entire lifetime profit on Polymarket of $1.03 million. This is not a casual punt.

How the bet plays out

The two positions work together, so the result decides everything:

  • Draw or LASK win: Both bets pay. The trader makes a profit of around $1.58 million.
  • Liverpool win by exactly one goal: The handicap bet pays but the main bet loses. That’s a net loss of roughly $326,000.
  • Liverpool win by two or more: Both bets lose, for a loss of about $1.02 million.

In short, raybanman needs Liverpool to drop points tonight. A narrow Liverpool win only softens the blow.

Pre-match: Liverpool favourites, but cheaper than the bookies think
liverpool vs lask

Liverpool head to Linz as clear favourites. Polymarket gives them a 69% chance to win, with LASK at 13% and the draw at 19%. Traders have put more than $1 million into this match’s markets before kick-off, including $442,000 on the match result alone.

The interesting part is that 69% sits noticeably below traditional bookmakers. They have Liverpool around 3/10, which implies something closer to 77%. Polymarket traders are clearly more cautious about Andoni Iraola’s side.

That caution has a reason. Liverpool were beaten 3-0 by Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday, their first defeat under Iraola.

They’ve won only two of their first six Premier League games. They were also without Cody Gakpo, Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexander Isak against City, so tonight’s team sheet could move the price before a ball is kicked.

LASK are making their first-ever appearance in the Champions League league phase. They got here by overturning a 4-0 deficit against Celtic in the play-off, but lost 1-0 in Athens on matchday one.

They have never beaten a Premier League side, and Liverpool won both meetings between the clubs in the 2023-24 Europa League, 3-1 in Linz and 4-0 at Anfield.

What else the market expects:

A Liverpool win by two or more goals: 44%.

Over 3.5 goals: 39%.

Both teams to score: 56%. That’s a nod to LASK’s attacking threat at home, where they’ve scored 15 goals in their last four matches.

What to watch: The first 20 minutes. If LASK score first, expect a sharp swing, because the market has Liverpool to score first at 72%. An early Liverpool goal should push their price into the 80s quickly.
