Texas Senate odds flip as Democrats challenge GOP stronghold

Traders give James Talarico the edge over Ken Paxton in a state Republicans have won for decades. Can Trump turn the race around?

Oct 9, 2026 • 2:04 PM EDT
Texas senate, US election

Texas seems to no longer be a safe Republican Senate seat, as many had expected. With less than a month until Election Day, traders favor Democrat James Talarico over Republican Ken Paxton, putting this heavily red state at the center of the fight for US Senate control – and making it an interesting arena for the traders.

The Texas Senate Election Winner market gives Talarico a 63% chance of winning, and just 37% to Paxton, as of Friday at 17 UTC. The market has seen more than $2.75 million in total trading volume by the time of writing.

This has become one of several races, including Kansas, that are gathering major attention, especially as they could help determine whether Republicans retain their narrow Senate majority or whether Democrats take over.

Trump steps in as Paxton faces pressure

The pricing stands firmly against Texas's political history as a traditionally Republican state. Donald Trump won it in 2024 by 14 percentage points, but recent Senate polling has shown it to be an unexpectedly competitive state.

A New York Times/Siena College poll from October 3 put Talarico ahead 51% to 45%, while the RealClearPolling average had Talarico leading by 2.8 points as of October 5. This suggests that both the polls and the markets are in agreement.

“Republicans understand they have a real threat they need to defend against, and Democrats see a real opportunity where they can go on offense, and potentially win a U.S. Senate seat and maybe even the governor’s race as well,” said Brendan Steinhauser, a Texas-based GOP strategist.

The race has become important enough for Trump to campaign personally for Paxton. On October 7, the two appeared together at a San Antonio rally, Trump’s third Texas visit in just a month. Reuters also reported that Republicans decided on heavy spending to defend this territory.

And yet, Trump's support may not be enough. His own approval rating stood at 32% in a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll. Additionally, Paxton faces quite a competitive opponent. Still, some Republicans argue that the president’s appearance is exactly what Paxton needs. Others disagree.

“Republicans’ big idea to save their flailing Texas dummymander is to put Donald Trump front and center. There’s just one problem – his approval numbers are in the toilet,” said Madison Andrus, a spokesperson for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

However, there’s a campaign flashpoint traders could be keeping an eye on: a public debate. While Talarico has requested one, none has been scheduled as of yet. But should this change, the odds might follow.
