Is the money on the White Sox smart or sentimental?

White Sox World Series odds sit at 4%, but betting volume is soaring. Are traders spotting value or backing an underdog story?

baseball weighing scales

The Chicago White Sox weren't supposed to be here. They finished 84-78, reached the playoffs as the American League's sixth seed, and haven't played in an American League Championship Series since winning the World Series in 2005.

They went into Thursday's Game 4 of the Division Series leading the Cleveland Guardians 2-1, one win from ending that wait.

Prediction markets have started taking notice. On Polymarket's $43.8 million World Series market, the White Sox have just an 4% chance of winning the title, but their contract has attracted $3.1 million in volume.

That's more than any other team in the market, including the two-time defending champion Dodgers ($0.8 million) and the 98-win Rays ($0.7 million).

Heavy volume at a low price usually means one of two things: either sharp traders see value the price hasn't caught up with, or a wave of sentimental bets is chasing a story.

Chicago fits well into that latter pattern. It's a young team that swept Houston on the road, won its first four playoff games away from home, and brings the underdog edge that attracts new money.

Is 4% fair?

Chicago would likely need to beat the Rays to win the title. Tampa Bay won the American League East at 98-64 and swept the Yankees. Then Chicago would have to overcome either the Dodgers or the 103-win Brewers.

The White Sox have real strengths, including an offense that averaged 4.79 runs a game in the regular season and a bullpen that carried them through October. However, Cleveland also beat them 9-3 in Game 3 once its bats woke up.

Predicbook's read is that 4% is about right and possibly a little generous. Even if Chicago manages to defeat Cleveland, it will enter every remaining series as the underdog. Three straight upsets are a long shot, and the volume reflects enthusiasm, not edge.

The better opportunity may be in this market. If the White Sox reach the ALCS, watch whether their price against Tampa Bay drifts high on sentiment alone. That's where a story-driven market is most likely to overreach.
