Georgia governor race leaves prediction market traders split

The market is pricing Georgia’s governor race almost evenly after the candidates’ debate, leaving traders little room for error as early voting nears.

Georgia governor race

The Georgia governor market is now pretty much a coin flip after the two candidates’ first and last face-to-face debate.

Polymarket traders are now nearly evenly split in this race, with Republican Rick Jackson at nearly 51% and Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms at just below 50%.

Currently, very few factors are splitting the two, and the market highlights this with about $147,000 traded so far (Wednesday, 13 UTC).

And the timing’s relevant. Jackson and Bottoms faced each other on Tuesday in the presumably only debate during the campaign – just six days before Georgia’s October 13 early voting starts.

At the same time, the tight pricing matches the tight polling results as well. A Wedgewood poll from October 3 put Jackson at 51% and Bottoms at 49%. Many other recent surveys have also kept the candidates within the margin of error.

All in all, it's a very interesting situation for the traders.

Why the debate matters now

The debate itself is unlikely to make some dramatic changes in the race itself. However, it may have given traders new information at the moment they need it to make their decisions.

Moreover, political scientist Zachary Peskowitz of Emory University told Georgia Recorder that any mistakes or gaffes could cost a candidate a lot in a race this close.

Finally, traders need to take the overall political setting into account. Jackson is a Trump-endorsed Republican who has aligned with Georgia Governor Brian Kemp after previously putting himself forward as Trump’s “favorite governor.”

On the other hand, Bottoms is the former Atlanta mayor who has made these ties between Jackson and Trump a key point in her criticism of her opponent.

So, with this little separation, all information matters to traders to weigh it carefully. For now, the market is saying that neither the polling nor the candidates’ performances were enough to form a decisive gap. Therefore, traders are waiting for early voting data, campaign spending, new polling, or another factor that would allow for a meaningful market move.
