France markets top $900K as election and unrest collide

France’s presidential election market dominates trading as protests fuel political uncertainty and bring government resignations back into focus.

France, elections, protests

France is seeing yet another uptick in the markets, as attention to the 2027 presidential election clashes with a major fresh wave of unrest in the country.

France-related markets on Polymarket attracted some $900,000 in trading over 24 hours, specifically tied to political or government-related events. The presidential election market alone accounted for around $802,000, a number that makes it the clear driver of the day’s trading.

Speaking of which, the next French presidential election market puts Marine Le Pen at 47%, ahead of former prime minister Édouard Philippe at 19%. By the time of writing (Monday at 11 UTC), this market has seen more than $153.6 million in volume. Compared to the momentum described in Predictbook’s previous analysis, the figures display persistent interest in the outcome.

Le Pen’s hold on the number 1 position comes as France faces mounting political and economic pressure. President Emmanuel Macron is set to leave office in spring 2027, just six months from now, but the contest for the successor is unfolding amidst government instability, disputes over public spending, public frustration over living costs, and more.

Unrest brings fresh attention to political risk

France’s political outlook has been complicated by the nationwide demonstrations over deteriorating public services that escalated on October 17. This latest wave of nationwide protests actually began on September 18 as high school and student blockades over education conditions, but it has since expanded into a mass movement against the cost of living, inflation, and government policies.

The peaceful protests were soon followed by violent clashes and attacks on public buildings by some groups, as authorities are reportedly making thousands of arrests and public dissatisfaction grows. The Guardian reported that politicians from both left and right called for Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez to resign over the handling of the situation, but Macron rejected his resignation.

The unrest, however, has drawn attention to Polymarket’s state-of-siege market, and despite the violence, looting, and building torching, traders assign only about a 4% chance of France declaring a state of siege by December 31. The market has so far generated roughly $111,600 in volume, though it’s still a new contract.

With the presidential race months away and the government under such heavy pressure, traders will likely be watching to see whether the current crisis will change the candidates’ standing in any meaningful way.
