AOC leads 2028 Democratic nominee market despite open field
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tops Polymarket’s Democratic nominee race, but several rivals stand within striking distance. The battle’s taking shape.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) is leading the market on the 2028 Democratic presidential nominee, but the race is still wide open almost two years before the party selects its candidate.
Polymarket puts AOC at around 19%, ahead of Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff at 16% and California Governor Gavin Newsom at 14%. Moreover, former Vice President Kamala Harris sits at approximately 8%.
This market has attracted nearly $1.3 billion in trading volume, so it has the potential to become a closely watched gauge of early expectations, even if it’s trader-focused.
Traders are currently weighing a very crowded field, waiting for a signal as to which potential candidate could establish a commanding lead.
AOC's advantage comes with a major caveat
Ocasio-Cortez is a well-known figure on the Democratic Party’s progressive wing, which means that she has two significant advantages: a recognizable national profile and a base of enthusiastic supporters.
She also left the door open for a potential 2028 presidential run, saying in August that she hadn’t ruled it out. For now, she said, her focus is on the 2026 midterm elections.
That said, she hasn’t formally launched a presidential campaign. Per the US government website, the presidential hopefuls will register and announce their intention to run next spring, in just a few months. Primary and caucus debates start next summer.
Meanwhile, Newsom has executive experience as California governor and comes with a national political network, so he may be a strong opponent. Ossoff could appeal to Democrats who’d prefer a candidate with experience winning elections in a state that remains divided between the two parties.
Also, the race will very much depend on whether Harris decides to run again and which other prominent figures enter the arena.
The Democratic National Convention is scheduled for August 7-10, 2028, when the party will formally nominate its presidential ticket. The Republican National Convention’s exact dates haven't yet been announced.
So, for now, AOC’s lead in the market is more of an early signal of trader sentiment and can’t be seen as a reliable forecast. There are many factors, including the midterms and incoming campaigns, that can easily reshape the market well before the nomination is actually settled.
